In the first three months of 2018, the number of deals in Africa and the Middle East dropped by 16% from Q4 last year but their value was slightly up by 11%. Compared to the equivalent first quarter of 2017, there were declines in both M&A volume and value – 23% and 19%, respectively.
The financial sector ranked first by number of deals in Q1 2018 (23 in total), as it continued to attract significant PE and VC interest, particularly in the area of payment solution providers and microfinance. However, in terms of total value, oil & gas was head and shoulders above all other sectors with transactions worth USD 8.3bn in total.
